now everything i link to here (and nearly everything i use) is, generally speaking, free, and sometimes also open-source, not for any sort of ideological reason but because i'm a cheap bastard.

for reference i have a windows 10 laptop so some of the items here might not be compatible with or work differently on your machine etc etc

computers & programming

text editors

• sublime text ⬩ sublime text ❤️❤️ a lightweight text editor that i use for coding as well as making this website
• notepad++ ⬩ another text editor, which i mostly use for miscellaneous notes and making quick edits to files

recommended themes / plugins

i just can't stop making lists

general:

• emmet ⬩ various snippets and functions for web dev
• rosé pine theme ⬩ pretty

sublime text (via package control):

• comment marks ⬩ since the native bookmarking function sucks ass
• cattleya ⬩ ourple color scheme
• DAneo theme ⬩ which is for some reason different from a color scheme
• colorsublime ⬩ a collection of textmate themes, compatible with ST

notepad++ (plugins list):

• menu search ⬩ functionally similar to the command palette in ST or VS code
• take notes ⬩ take notes

CLI tools

• scoop ⬩ package manager for windows, what i use to install some of these programs
• pandoc ⬩ convert between a ton of different document formats
• imagemagick ⬩ quickly edit images from the command line
• oxipng ⬩ lossless png compression optimizer

writing

• focuswriter ⬩ distraction-free word processor
• obsidian ⬩ writing / note-taking in a custom flavor of markdown
• libreoffice ⬩ FOSS alternative to microsoft office suite, unfortunately very slow on my laptop :(

art / graphics

• krita ⬩ digital art software
• libresprite ⬩ FOSS alternative to aseprite, for pixel art and animations
• inkscape ⬩ for working with vector graphics (which i do not do often)
